Changes to font

When we first were creating our title sequence we had the font El Valiente but as the theme is based around muslim culture we decided to have more araab style font to fit the theme. The font was then changed to XXII ARABIAN - ONENIGHTSTAND.

Revisions to Pitch

we changed the font of the title to something more suitable and relevant to our title sequence
*Add Haram Font Here*

we have decided to mime the words instead of actually speak in our title sequences, we will just have music playing in the background.

we have completed the storyboard to help illustrate what we want to do for our film and the particular shots we take.

we will demonstrate the bad acts by having the main character do things that would be considered haram e.g. drugs.

How to create Soundtracks in Garageband (BP19)

Garageband is a software application made by Apple, which allows the people using it to create music and podcasts. We were given a brief introduction in class on how to make a sound track.

To create sounds on Garageband you start off by selecting "New Project" and a range of choices will come up just like the one in the image, you can choose from any but Empty Project would be a good idea as you can start from scratch using any sounds you want for the soundtrack.

When you selected that option, you will see a blank canvas with a selection of sounds you can choose from at the right hand side of the screen. The more sounds you choose, the more simplified your search would be. For example, if you are looking for a relaxing sound but you want it to be from voices you would click the acoustic button and the relaxed button and the sounds in that form would come up underneath it. You'll then have to select one of the many sounds you like or think is best for your project and drag it the middle part of the screen right at the top. Just as it it shown in the image underneath. To make your sound last longer all you have to do it go at the corner of the loop (the sound you chose to use) and a small rotating arrow would be seen. Then you click and drag the loop and you will see that it will get longer.

When you have done that, you can make your soundtrack more interesting by adding more sounds to it. Each time you find a sound you like and know is going to fit in with the previous loop(s), you drag it under the recent loop. You can move the loop forward or backwards so it comes after or before the previous sound or you can make it shorter or longer so that it'll finish after or before the previous loop.

Evidence of editing (Blogpost Task 43)

This is shows our group putting together a rough draft of our movie so we get an idea of how our title sequence is going to plan out.

We are using Final Cut Pro to edit our title sequence as it is the most efficient form editing software and it is the most easiet available to us as we are a low budget production company.

Blogging Health Check 2

Hi Jonathan

Here is your feedback for blogging health check 2. You should write a blog post reflecting on this and how you are going to improve.

“Your planning is coming together but you must make sure that your storyboard and pitch are up! You would also benefit from some more work on research. Find a couple of films that have influenced your ideas (e.g. Bend It Like Beckham) and discuss any similarities to your film. You can use stills of your footage so far to illustrate this. You should then find the films on YouGov profiler and compare their audience to your target audience, as you need to show that you have considered audience.
When you are filming you need to make sure that you reflect on the process and document any changes that you make to your ideas. Set yourself targets to achieve before a session and then evaluate this afterwards. You should also be taking photographs of your filming and posting videos of interviews with the director, actors etc.
As a group you also need to visually brand your blog so that it reflects the design ideas of your film.”

Let me know if you have any questions

The "Teen Title Sequence" we did was good, the themes and purpose of the film was clear throughout with no diverting. As there are many different influences for our title sequence, the visual and story line have visible similarities to some films of the past, one example is "Bend it like Beckham".

During the editing process, some fading and effects will have to be used to smoothen the transitions of the piece.

What the actors wore when filming (BP32)

The clothes Leyla wore were exactly what we wanted her to look. By having her wearing the scarf whereas wearing jeans at the same time shows us that she does not take her religion seriously.
The clothes that Leyla's 'bad' friends wore shows us that they are not good people as their face is covered by their hoods. Also we can see that Leyla is not wearing her scarf when she is with them which shows that she doesn't want them to see her differently, as a good girl, but she wants them to accept her and that she wants to be part of their group.

An Idea of the Clothes of The Actors (BP31)

1. Leyla:

A black jacket.

She will be wearing the scarf in the beginning but will then take it off.

Black bag.

Black jeans.
Black heeled boots.

2. Leyla's Muslim Friend:

She'l' be wearing a skirt with a top and shoes.
Headscarf will be on as well.
A hooded jacket.

3. Leyla's Non-muslim Friends:

A Bubble jacket.
Loose jeans.

A Snapback.

Locations for Haram (BP30)

We are going to film our Title Sequence for 'Haram' in 4 places:

1.
Whitechapel Mosque.

2.
Outside City and Islington college.

3.
Owens Field (Small Park near College)

4. Iman's House.

Title Sequence of HSD and YD (BP14)

High School Title Sequence: Grease.

Youth Drama Title Sequence: La Heine.

HSD and YD Title Sequences: Differences and Similarites(BP12)

High School Drama's: HSD's
Youth Drama's: YD's

Similarities:

  1. Both of their title sequences start with a blank, black screen with writing on it and then move onto a moving image.
  2. The majority of High School Drama's and Youth Drama's end with the title of who the film was written by and who it was directed by.

Differences:

  1. The majority of HSD films are mainstreams and the majority of YD films are independent. I think this is because the High School Drama's are mostly for someone's entertainment, for them to laugh about and enjoy watching, whereas Youth Drama's are mostly based on a real life story that has a meaning behind it and its more on the serious side. Even though it might be delightful and sometimes amusing to watch, it has a more formal story line than a High School Drama.
  2. The number of titles for High School Drama is going to be longer than the Youth Drama one because there would be more casts and producers for it due to High School Drama's being mainstream and seen by everyone.

Anuvahood - Type of Title Sequence.

Order of credits:
Film by
Title
Stars
Rest of cast
Costume designer
Make up designer
Production designer
Music by
Music supervisors
Editor
Director of photography
Co Producers
Executive Producers
Producers
Written by
Directed by

the title sequence is unconventional, the order of the credits are unusual as the main people in the film e.g. director, producer are at the end of the credits and normally they would be at the front. this title sequence is titles on a moving image. It shows us the titles whilst the beginning of the movie is playing in the background. this may not be a good tactic as people will be more focused on the actual film rather than the credits. as it is an independent film, there are not that many credits compared to a film that is more mainstream.

Blogging health check 2 feedback

18 Posts
You are not blogging nearly enough! Should be on 30 - 40 posts by now. What you have produced is good, however your mark is falling because you are not blogging consistently (2 or 3 posts per week min) and therefore there is a lot of work missing. I have issued you with a Cause For Concern because if you carry on working at this level you are at serious risk of not achieving.

Improvements
- Use the blogging check list to identify missing blog posts and catch up asap!
- You have posted pitch feedback but where is the pitch? Your presentation must be posted to the blog
- Personalise the blog
- Attend workshop for support with catching up.

I am aware of the lack of blogging, with all the filming I just lost track of where I was with my blogging, our pitch has been posted but the embed code wouldn't work so it doesn't show. I will catch up on my blogging and make sure I get up to around 40 blogs before half term.

Blogging health check 1 feedback

Ok so far but you have some work to do to get your mark up to where you would want it to be!
To improve
- Pay careful consideration to the presentation of your posts. Fix back to front images
- Each post should be detailed, especially group ones
- Images should be clear and able to be read/viewed
- Vary your use of ICT for presentation
- Embed Prezis etc rather than posting links
- Keep up to date with blog posts

Based on my teachers feedback, I could do a lot more to make my blog look better e.g. include more pictures to make my blog look more creative. i also need to blog more frequently in order to get a better grade.

Blog Post 43

When editing we had to use sequence effects like fade in fade out to stop the tranitions looking jumpy.

Production Schedule (Blogpost Task 34)

These are the times we have decided to shoot our footage:

Sunday 1st February- Shoot from 9 am to 1pm in my bedroom, as lighting is best at this time.
Monday 2nd February- We are going to go to Whitechapel Mosque to shoot. From 9 am to 12pm during our lesson with (Phoebe and Marissa).
Monday 9th February- Shoot are last scenes of footage outside and inside college.Re-shoot any shots if needed.

Reflection of production of 'Haram' (Blogpost Task 43)

These images shows us editing and going through footage as a GROUP.

In the images, we, as a group, were looking through all of our footage and categorised the ones that we were going to use for the title sequence, the footage that we had to re-shoot or the footage that we did not need to use and get rid of all together. By doing this, it made it easier for us to start editing our title sequence and focusing on the main, important footage we had to use.

As we were putting the beginning part of the title sequence for Haram, we started to see that as we were putting the footage together for the beginning part of Haram, that it was quickly going up to 2 minutes. From that we have all agreed that we did not need to film any more because it would make it more difficult to choose from all the footages we had and it would waste the time we would have to spend on editing.

Reflection of production of 'Haram' (Blogpost Task 43)

Today we went over our footage that we have shot during the course of this week. We decided that certain shots need to be re-shot as it didn't flow with the our title sequence, for instance our bus scenes looked amateur so we decided to re do it today.
This picture shows us going through my bed room scenes and trying to make a rough cut of how the different shots will go together.

We decided to speed up some footage so it could fit into our title sequence time frame. Also add some effects to different scenes to set different moods.

Production of Haram filming session 23/02/15 (Blogpost Task 42)

This image shows one of our group member filming.

This is Jordan holding the Fig Rig which has the camera on. We were going to film Leyla getting on the bus and leaving her Muslim Friend.

The problems that occurred during filming is that it was hard to control the 'fig rig' as it was our first time using it. We used it to shoot a scene in which 'Leyla' the main character was getting on the bus to go to mosque. However when we used it after a while we got used to holding the 'fig rig' steadily so our footage could come out looking professional.

Blog post

To avoid copyright issues we have decided to make or use music from Garageband. For foley we can get sounds from non-copyrighted websites such as :
https://www.freesound.org/browse/

Here is a list of Foley sounds we may need:

  • Bus horn
  • Phone dialing
  • Footsteps
  • Moving of clothing
  • Squeaky doors
  • Paper folding
  • Doors opening
  • Doors closing

Initial Ideas on Haram (BP22)

The sub-genre we have chosen to create is Youth Drama.

Our storyline is about a muslim girl that is metaphorically living two lives, the halal and the haram one. The plot of this was to show the comparison of the way she acts with her muslim friend and the way she acts towards her non-muslim friends.

The main character is called Leyla and she is a calm and collected girl when she is around her muslim friends but is always peer pressured into doing stuff when she is with her non-muslim friends. She feels ashamed of wearing the scarf in front of them so she always takes it off before meeting them which is a way of showing us that she wants to fit in with them by being like them and wants to be accepted by the group.

The social group that will e introduced are the Drug Addicts who Leyla is going to hang around with after meeting her muslim friend.

Font Styles for our Title (BP24)

At the beginning of the Film Sequence making we chose 6 different font style for our title Haram:

1.
Street Soul.
2.
Whoa.
3.
Corona.
4.
Desdemona.
5.
El Valiente.
6.
Street Soul.

But after the feedback our teacher has given us saying that these fonts do not go well with the theme of our Film, we had to look for a more Islamic / Arab font and we chose this:

Sub-genre conventions (BP14)

Analysis on Youth Drama Title Sequence.

La Haine

Camera:
There were many close up shots throughout the title sequence of the peoples faces. It opens up with a slow zoom in to Said's face (the lead boy) which really shows his facial expression and then goes into a low angle shot. When Said goes to his friend Vinz's how, there is another close up shot except its of Vinz's sleeping face with Said in the background.

Editing:
Its was in black and white and there was a montage news footage.

Mise-en-scene:
The setting was in a Paris. There were many clips of protests and riots which included a lot of violence and police men in uniform everywhere. There were many people running around to get away from the danger or to join in and many vehicles were burnt.

We were introduced to Said when he was grafting on the wall in an estate writing "Screw The Police" in French and wrote his name underneath it as a tag. He was wearing a tracksuit and a chain which shows that he is from the Hood.

Sound:
A non-diegetic sound was a song that was playing was a reggae song from Bob Marley, the song talked aout burning and looting which connected to what was happening in the film. The diegetic songs that were played was a female reporter speaking on the news, there were people shouting, windows breaking and dogs barking.

What are the Sub-genres of Teen Drama Films? (BP11)

There are two sub-genres in Teen Drama Films.

The first sub-genre is called Youth Drama which focuses on the social dilemmas faced by the main character which is often a male. Youth Dramas are popular with teen audiences and is seen to be a more accurate representation of the youth than High School Dramas. The main character is often rebellious and/or in competition with someone. It focuses mostly on the difficulties of adolescent experiences and shows the life of a youth that has a problem. A film that can represent that is Kidulthood.

The second sub-genre is High School Drama which focuses on the socialisation of teens and young adults by institutions like college, school or at home. High School Drama became very popular in the 1970's, 80's and 90's with lots of variations within the sub-genre. Unlike the Youth Drama, High School is often 'girl centred' but might focus on a male lead. They often celebrate the idea of being youth and being young and give an impression of it being fun, which is the total opposite of Youth Drama. However, High School Drama tend to focus on changes and conflicts between different social groups at school, which can be a similarity between the two sub-genres. An example of a High School Drama film is EasyA.
