Question 7 evaluation

And now finally here is our title sequence.....

Question 2 Evaluation

Play This Quiz!

In the title sequence we took inspiration from films we have watched and the experiences we ourselves have faced as teenagers. This is good for a teen drama especially a youth drama as we can portray first hand the emotions and thoughts youth have in particular situations. As Bend It Like Beckham touched on similar topics to the topics we spoke about in our film opening, we looked at that as inspiration to see how they made their opening. Also, in many films teenagers are seen as badly behaved and disorderly. Despite some teens being like this, the majority are not like this so we wanted to show the other aspects of many teens, religious, kindhearted and god fearing. Of course, many teens can fall victim to peer pressure and we also wanted to show this.

We showed the contrast of worlds, by having the two different locations and the loss of the hijab when the main character is with her friends. The mosque in the first image is the main place for muslim worship, the image below is Owens Park, a place used for smoking which is frowned upon in islam. In addition to this, in the lower picture the main character is surrounded by boys in hooded tops, this is a stereotype used a lot in media for antisocial behaviour, this is one social group we represented in our title sequence.

Similarly, in Bend It Like Beckham, we see contrast with the main character wearing traditional religious garments when in the religious setting with her family, but with her friends she is not, instead she wears more Western clothing, this is just one of the aspects we took from this film.

Evaluation: Question 7.

Q7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learn't in the progression from it to the full product?

This is the preliminary  project i have made.

When we had to plan and make a story board for this project, i was a bit baffled at why we had to go so deep into it and i wasn't sure about what shots we were supposed to use. In the making of the preliminary project, i was in charge of filming. At that time i was not sure how to use the camera and was having a bit of a problem putting it on the tripod. I also didn't have any experience at working with my group so the awkwardness also affected the the planning.

To edit the preliminary on Final Cut Pro was quite simple as i didn't know about the transitions we could add so it was mostly a cut and put it in the sequence kind of thing.

When we were planning for the Title sequence (not the preliminary), there was a big change in the way things were done. My group and i have quickly found the theme we wanted for the film and i easily drew a story board knowing what shots were needed and what wasn't. Also, me and my group all knew each other so the atmosphere between us was calm and we were all feeling confident towards our opinions towards the film. We also respected each others opinions and due to that we were able to produce an amazing Opening Sequence for 'Haram'.

Evaluation: Question 6.

Q6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this project?

We have used different technologies when we were in the process of making our title sequence. We have used a flip camera to record the interviews of the director and main character, we have used a JVC camera whilst filiming our film and with it came the tripod and the fig rig.
The fig rig was very useful to use when we were in a rush or when we were outside and had to move at the same time we were filming because it allowed us to keep the camera still whilst filming. As it would have been very hard to either hold the camera and move or hold the tripod and move.
The software we have used to edit the opening sequence was Final Cut Pro. In the beginning, it was quite difficult to use as me and my group didn't know what we could or couldn't do on it. Also, we had many clips that we wanted to include in our opening sequence but it would have made it too long and it would have dragged, so time keeping was very hard as well as choosing the most important clips needed to introduce the film.

I believe that our target audience could extend out to all Muslims in general. The adults may want to see how Muslim children behave whilst they are out and about, this doesn't apply to everyone as not all Muslim children act like how they are portrayed in the film.

Evaluation Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Representation: The way in which something is conveyed

we represented the social groups in our film in a negative way, we made it seem as if the youth were bad and were anti-school, we represented this in the costume we chose. everybody with their hoods up makes them look more intimidating

Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

we tried to conform to the traditional title sequence order, we used the title sequence of a film that inspired us whilst we were creating our title sequence, Bend it Like Beckham

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Evaluation Question 6

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Evaluation Question 6 by Slidely Slideshow

The technologies that we used whilst creating our title sequence include:

Final cut pro - the software we used to edit our clips, I didn't have much knowledge of using final cut pro prior to this film. as the editor I think I have developed quite a bit of skill in the editing department and I have developed my skills using final cut pro.

Motion - the software we used to create our titles for the the sequence, before our film I had never used motion before. even though I never created the title sequence, I think I am better at using it than I was before we started

without the ability to use final cut pro, our film would have been nowhere near as good as it is. we were able to cut and rearrange clips in order for our title sequence to look good. also, it allowed us to use effects that made our title sequence look a lot better. Also, the use of motion allowed us to use our own custom font and make our title sequence look professional. the use of the font added to the effect of our film as it fit it with our theme.

Question 4 Evaluation

Our target audience were 14-25 year olds

This interview is the director explaining what it was like filming this opening and how he was able to attract his target audience.

This interview is Iman, the actress who played the main character explaining what she had to due with her acting role to attract the target audience and how she got into acting.

Evaluation-Question 5

How did you attract attract/address your audience?

Our target audience are primary 18-24 year old, so it is important for them to relate to our title sequence 'Haram'. This is why we chose to have young actors and actresses to act in our title sequence so could appeal to that particular audience. Here is an interview with the director of the title sequence, explaining who the movie is attended for and a generalizations of the title sequence. Also with the main character of my title sequence (this may engage target audience as they may relate to her):

Also we used social media to engage our target audience as almost 95% of teenagers and adults are on one form of social media or another. The type of social media we choose was youtube, vimeo, twitter and facebook.
For example, here it shows our movie Twitter page in which we have already gained 37 followers! This a great way in spreading the word about or title sequence since we are independent.

Also from a rough cut feedback, Dan had told us that we should change the font of our title sequence so our intended audience could get a better feel of the genre. We took this is on board and changed the font to a more bollywood/arabic style.

Editing of blog 6/3/15

As it comes closer to our title sequence deadline, we have used the feedback from our rough copy to help better our sequence. Now we have deciding to change our font to better suit our film, use more effects and transitions to make our film look more efficient and even decide what type of sound we are going to be using.

Skills learnt throughout the making of my title sequence

During this process i was involved and contributed in many things as I helped with filming, editing, composing, directing, making the title credits and being the main character.

Making the Music (Music Composer): I really enjoyed making music as it was a fun and enjoyable process. I was involved in picking the most suitable soundtrack for our movie as well as helping to compose a soundtrack which we placed in the beginning of our final edit. I also liked searching and listening to foley sounds as it was important we included these in our movie. Searching and composing the music gave me more freedom to explore and find the most suitable and perfect soundtrack for our movie. Which I believe I done.

Working with the Camera & Directing: During this process I adopted many other roles including filming and directing. I was involved in filming some of the major parts of my opening title sequence for example the bedroom scene, the outside college scene and mosque scene. I also made choices about how good each take was, for example if the scene i took was good enough for the editing stage. During this process i gained many skills e.g. working better in a group, where we all shared ideas and divided roles, as well as being a team leader and discussing what people should be doing, I've learnt how to use a camera, and knowing which angles are better to film at, as well as knowing which shots are suitable for particular scenes.

Acting: I had never really done much acting before so being in front of a camera was more nerve racking but, with the support of my group members I did the best I could to make my scene realistic and engaging. Acting for our movie was very exciting and fun. Before this coursework I never had directed a movie or help to script one, this coursework has allowed me to develop in many areas including all of the factors above as well as looking more in depth into the technicality of film making. Even though at some stages acting was hard, I believed in myself and knew i could pull of this role of 'Layla'.

Wix Website

By having a website on Wix, it is easier the attention of our target audience which is teenagers as they frequently use the internet and find out about a lot of news via the web.So it is likely that many of them will go on the Wix website to find out about the latest movies, so that will help us gain more popularity and possibly help us expand from our niche audience to perhaps a bigger one. A website will bring traffic to our film. We are also considering making other forms of social media that also very much popular such as a Twitter account and Facebook account to reach our audience as it is a way of interacting with them.

Adding Effects to Final Cut Pro

Today I learnt how to add effects on Final Cut Pro.Firstly you go on the top left hand side of the screen, and then you'll see a little tab written 'effects' as shown on the pics below:

Post Production- Thoughts and Opinions

On Friday 6th March we uploaded our final edit. After a break from filming and editing i watched my film on the blog. I am generally please with our title sequence, however it could have been further improved. It was quite lengthy and used quite alot of transitions. Nonetheless the people i have previewed the film to have praised it and have exalted the cinematography of it. They are amazed by the precision of the shots and there story itself. A friend of mine said 'it is really relatable' and 'I wish it was an actual movie'

How to pick the perfect soundtrack for our title sequence

The two soundtracks we chose so far..

Choosing the soundtrack wasn't a lengthy process. I was quite familiar with music composition as i watch quite alot films from a variety of different cultures. After watching them we found a soundtrack that we were very fond of it.

These are the chosen soundtracks because we thought it would suit the setting and tone of film. We first experimented with these soundtracks by embedding them into final cut pro to see what they would sound like. Initially they weren't going to be used as not everyone in the group was fond of it and they didn't suit the scene the way we wanted it to look. However with some editing and audio filters it sounded perfect.

This is the soundtrack at the beginning of the our title sequence, it is non-copyrighted because it is from a non-signed Arab singer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DO9EQtDiMTY

Our second sound is the Quran prayer caller, it sets the theme of the mosque and is obviously not copy-righted:

Review

I think that our blog has been successful as we have covered alot and showed the processes we went through along the way of producing and editing our final piece. We were able to identify our target audience through research and catered to them accordingly.

In the filming process a lot of clips and scenes were made, giving us more than enough to choose from when editing, this made it much easier in the process, so much so that we didnt need to use all the scenes for our final film.

I was able to produce 51 blogs. If I could go back and change anything I would have added more photo evidence of planning, filming and editing.

Camera shots / angles

We used a number of shots, movement and angles in our film to make it look as professional and interesting as possible. These shots include:

Medium shots
Close Ups
Extreme Close Ups
Over the Shoulder
Establishing Shot
Locked Down Shot
Tracking Shot
Arc Shot
Eye Level Shot

Evidence of editing

Here I am editing the video we made and also looking at the blog to make sure everything is up to date.

Engaging our target audience

By having a website on Wix, it is easier to grab our target audience. As our target audience are teenagers, they are frequent users of the internet and find out about alot of news via the web. A website will bring traffic to our film. We could also make a Twitter account and Facebook account to reach our audience as it is a way of interacting with them.

Blogging health check 3

Below is the feedback I was given for the blogs I did so far:

Hi Jonathan

Just in case you haven't seen it on promonitor, here is your feedback from blogging health check 3 which was done over half term.

You have added some more work on planning but you still need to demonstrate that you have thought about the target audience. Look at the target audiences for some teen films (particular those that have influenced you) and consider how this compares to the target audience that you have in mind for your film.
You also need to include more reflection on the filming and editing that you have done. Make sure that you talk in detail about what has gone well and if you faced any challenges or needed to reshoot. You should also post any pictures that you have of filming and editing.
In general, you need to elaborate more in your posts and think more carefully about how you are presenting them.

Let me know if you have any questions
Phoebe

How to create titles in motion

You use the motion application that provides templates to create your title sequence.

You are given the option whether you want to make a sequence from a template or make your own from scratch.
There are a range of templates to choose from .

Once you have selected and made your title, export your title to your desired format so it can be use in other softwares.

Representation of Religion in our film

Mise En Scene

In our film we have the East London mosque, which is a place that is used for worship within the Muslim community and a key location for the plot we wanted to show. The rooms are filled with books and Arabic designs. In contrast we have Owens park, a place used for smoking, this shows the haraam element of the main character, as smoking is seen as bad in the Muslim religion.

Music

We begin our film with some arabic music that fits nicely with the muslim themes we wanted to portray in the first half of our opening. This is then contrasted with rap music that is so far removed from muslim culture.

Editing

In our film we have alot of slowed down scenes such as the unraveling of the main characters head scarf. These slowed down scenes are to emphasise key transitions between Muslim and haraam behaviour and vice versa.

Problems we faced when editing

When we began editing our film and tried to add the title sequences we found that the arabic font that we wanted was not coming up on final cut pro. As a solution we reinstalled the font and made the title sequences again.

Editing our blog (sound) 5/04/15

We have now successfully put together the videos in the sequence that we will be putting it in our title sequence. Now we are picking the sound to go behind our title sequence to set the up-beat youth drama that we intend to potray to our audience.

Blog Post 5 - 'Watching' documentary

From the watching documentary, i have learned that:

A good beginning must make the audience feel that it doesn’t know nearly enough yet, and at the same time make sure that it doesn’t know too little". This means that the role of the beginning of movie is to capture the attention of audience but not give too much of the movie away.

there are four main categories of title sequences:
- titles on a blank screen
- titles on still images
- titles over moving images
- titles using animations or motions

title sequences were originally created to show the audience who produced and distributed the film for copyright purposes. not long after they began to show the names of the starring actors from the film in the title sequence and ever since they have developed into key parts of the film which can tell a story before the film has even begun.

Director Jean Jacques says that "the risks of instant arousal might give all the excitement at the beginning and has nothing to compare it with". if the opening is gives away too much and excites the audiences there is a chance that they may not want to watch the rest of the film.

The order of the title sequence in this film are as follows:

Production Schedule

January 31st - February 1st - Iman filming herself at home, shows how the main character lives at home, beginning of the title sequence.

2nd February - we went to film at The London Mosque in Whitechapel, shows the good side of the main character and how she abides by religious rules

5th February - reviewing footage to make sure everything looks good, looking to see if we needed to re film anything

9th February - filming the scenes around the college, showing how the main character acts around friends.

12th February - finish editing to a point where we have our first rough cut.

Editing 2/3/14

a problem that arose whilst i was editing was that camera settings had been changed meaning that the quality of the clips were different. some of them were in 720p and the others were in 1080p. i had to get the clips converted so they were all the same quality.

also, we had clips that we recorded on a different camera which were a different format to what our other clips were. we also had to get them clips converted in order to use them. besides from that we created our title sequence and began to add it to the clips, we just need to add sound and we'll be done.

The production for this film was mainstream and the producers are Tony Shimkin and Lorne Michaels. The Associate producer is Jennifer Guinier and the co-producer is Louise Rosner.

The Main Characters are:
  • Cady Heron (played by Lindsey Lohan)
  • The Plastics: Rachel McAdams (played by Regina George), Karen Smith (played by Amanda Seyfried) and  Gretchen Wieners (played by Lacey Chabert).
  • Aron Samuels (played by Jonathan Bennett)
  • Janis Ian, one of Cady's bestfriend (played by Lizzy Caplan)
  • Damien, other one of Cady's bestfriend (played by Daniel Franzese)

The title sequence of the film 'Mean Girls' introduces that the main character named Cady Heron (who was played by Lindsay Lohan) has been living in Africa with her parents for her who life and that she has also been homeschooled by her mother. This therefore already tells the audience that she has never went to a public school before. The title sequence also shows her saying goodbye to her parents an entering 'high school territory'. This introduced a bit of the different social groups: the jocks, the geeks and the druggies. there are more social groups; such as 'the plastics' who are the three 'It Girls' in the High School, the cool Africans and the Asians and the nobodies, but they are bought up deeper into the beginning of the film.

Soundtrack for title sequence

The music in the title sequence and opening scene is important as it adds to the mood and feeling of the narrative and gives the viewer and idea of the scene and environment being set. The soundtrack can also add suspense and tension whilst watching the film.
