two subgenres of teen drama

Youth Drama & High school Drama

Sub-genre conventions

Youth Drama

  • Youth dramas focus on social dilemmas, faced by the main, often male, character.
  • Youth dramas are popular with teen audiences, seen to be more authentic representation of youth than HSD.
  • The character is often rebellious and/or in conflict with others.
  • This focuses on the difficulties of adolescent experience.
  • Portrays being a youth as difficult or a problem.

High School Drama
  • Shows the socialisation of teens and young adults by institutions such as school, college and at home.
  • They often, but not always, celebrate the idea of being young or youth as fun.
  • Often 'girl centred' but might focus on a male lead.
  • They tend to focus on changes, make-overs and/or conflict within different groups at school.

Practical Remake Activity

In our group we recreated the High School Drama 'The Breakfast Club', we took some of the scenes that were within our budget and location options and filmed them to imitate the opening title sequence. We changed the order of the conventions in the drama to fit the ordinary teen drama conventions.

Summaries of Youth Drama and High School Drama

Mainstream Youth Dramas and High School Dramas have a longer and more detailed opening title sequence than the independent ones as they have a budget to get a larger team behind them and more production companies to support them who have to be named.

An independent teen drama may just have one production company to support them and fund them as the film does not guarantee large profit.
